HAITI - WHAT IS OUR PART? January 30, 2010 11:30pm
How easy it is to detach ourselves, without much conscious thought, from calamitous tragedies elsewhere. We may feel bad for people who are suffering but it's an emotional which often fails to lead to actual help. In Haiti, people are suffering -- wounded, orphaned, widowed, homeless, hungry, thirsty. In some way, grieving, maybe feeling hopeless. Is that okay? If it was a family member, someone in our church, or maybe even a neighbour, it would be "close to home" and we'd probably feel compelled to help. But Haiti, on the other side of the globe, is not in front of us. For many of us, it's peripheral at best. Haiti and her people are in need of compassion, of a helping hand. It's time to expand our periphery, remove the "blinders", roll up the sleeves and pitch in. Giving financially is a great way -- and most needed right now. It doesn't have to be huge sums -- just something. It can also be relatively easy. There are dedicated organizations, working hard in the country, that know how to put your money to work.
$50 million has been earmarked, to be given via eligible Canadian charities (until Feb 12 or the maximum has been reached).
You can confirm a charity is registered with the government (CRA). More info.
